Fourth and fifth grade students across the Midwest today planted trees in their communities and brought seedlings home as part of POET Tree Arbor Day events.

“POET Tree” is POET’s annual Arbor Day initiative. This year, students and POET team members planted or took home 6,325 trees, almost twice as many as last year. In Sioux Falls, trees were planted at three elementary schools: Rosa Parks, Cleveland and Harvey Dunn.

“Trees and plants are nature’s biorefineries, taking sunlight and converting it to stored energy,” POET CEO Jeff Broin said. “Today we’re celebrating that amazing process that plays such a key role in all our lives.”

Landscape Garden Centers partnered with POET at the events in Sioux Falls.

“We enjoy working with POET to help educate the next generation about Arbor Day and planting trees,” said Paul DeJong, co-owner at Landscape Garden Centers. “We feel it is very important to get the next generation involved in horticulture whether that is planting a tree or a garden.”

Along with the tree planting, students also took part in the POET Tree poetry contest, as part of National Poetry month. Each POET plant will have its own winner who will receive a prize and move on to the corporate-wide contest as will participants from other communities who learned about ethanol this year in the “South Dakota Road Trip”.

In Sioux Falls, POET announced its South Dakota Road Trip poetry winners today. They are: Jessica Welu (Hill City), Margaret Barnett (Wagner), Caleb Gebhard (Mitchell), Caitlyn LaCroix (Scotland), Tess Oplinger (Olivet - Menno School).
