Commercialization Plan
POET is helping to lead the way in cellulosic ethanol. Our pioneering Project LIBERTY will be a milestone in transportation, energy and agricultural history.
But more important is what it foretells: 50 states working toward the common goals of energy freedom, good jobs and clean alternatives for America.
We take the nation's energy goals seriously. The 36 billion gallons of renewable fuels, including ethanol from grain and cellulose, laid out in the Renewable Fuel Standard are well within our industry's capabilities once success in Emmetsburg grows and evolves.
POET is working to be involved in the production of 3.5 billion gallons of cellulosic ethanol by 2022. That goal has three parts.
- 1 billion gallons by introducing Project LIBERTY technology to the rest of POET's network of 27 plants in seven states.
- 1.1 billion gallons by licensing this technology to other ethanol producers.
- 1.4 billion gallons by using our experience to expand to new feedstock such as wheat straw, rice hulls, woodchips or switchgrass.
According to the Department of Energy, 10,000‐20,000 jobs are created for every one billion gallons of ethanol production capacity. Using this benchmark, we estimate POET's plan could create an additional 35,000-70,000 jobs.
Research by the USDA shows that 1.3 billion tons of biomass is available in the United States, spread across all 50 states. We believe that cellulosic ethanol has the potential to be a 50-state solution to our energy problems.
