POET-DSM Advanced Biofuels wins Biofuels Digest’s "Industrial Symbiosis" award for 2013-14

Energy process, co-location cost-effectively adds value for farmers, local economy

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (April 30, 2013) – POET-DSM Advanced Biofuels recently received Biofuels Digest’s 2013-14 “Industrial Symbiosis” award at the Advanced Biofuels Leadership Conference, conducted in Washington, DC.

The award represents the achievement in developing co-located facilities that transform the cost and complexity of advanced biofuels by sharing inputs, outputs, infrastructure, or other technology. It was presented by Publisher Jim Lane.

“In the case of POET-DSM’s project in Emmetsburg, Iowa, the waste residue associated with one production process, which utilizes excess stover left over from corn production, becomes an input into the facility’s co-located cellulosic biofuels process,” Lane said. “This results in adding value for the farmer, building the Emmetsburg economy, and producing renewable fuel far more cost-effectively than could be accomplished by building a greenfield plant.”

“We’re very honored to be recognized for our team’s hard work in commercializing this complex process to benefit not only farmers and residents near the plant, but also all the global population, which will enjoy cleaner air, more readily available energy sources and sustainable local commerce,” said Steve Hartig, General Manager – Licensing for POET-DSM Advanced Biofuels. “We hope to show others throughout the world that these benefits produced locally in Iowa can be enjoyed in China, India, Thailand, Brazil and a host of other countries.”

POET-DSM’s Project LIBERTY will produce 20 million gallons of cellulosic biofuel per year – later ramping up to 25 million gallons – from corn cobs, leaves, husk and some stalk in Emmetsburg, Iowa. Construction is scheduled to be completed this quarter.

About POET-DSM Advanced Biofuels, LLC

POET-DSM Advanced Biofuels, LLC, is a 50/50 joint venture between Royal DSM and POET, LLC. Based in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, the company is a cooperative effort of two innovators that provides a key to unlocking the opportunity of converting corn crop residue into cellulosic bio-ethanol. Built on the strengths of both companies, the joint venture has a critical mission: to make cellulosic bio-ethanol competitive with corn bio-ethanol, the most competitive renewable liquid transportation fuel on the US market today. Drawing on the deep expertise and experience of POET and DSM in different areas of converting cellulosic biomass into bio-ethanol, POET - DSM Advanced Biofuels will have its first commercial-scale plant co-located with POET' Biorefining -- Emmetsburg in Emmetsburg, Iowa. Based on this plant, the JV plans to globally license an integrated technology package for the conversion of corn crop residue to cellulosic bio-ethanol. More information: www.poetdsm.com
